LOS COYOTES

Algunas noches
Cuando intento dormir
Escucho el aullido
De los coyotes
Y recuerdo
El par
Que trotaba
En la mira
De mi rifle
1000 millas al norte
No disparé
Estaba harto
Mis manos
Aun olían a sangre.

ALMUERZO

Comida China
Familia
Felicidad en botellas
Mariscos santos
La amistad
Puede ser
Más frágil
Que el chop suey.

LOS NIÑOS

De Teotokos
A sus amiguitos
Los veo

CARRETERA TIJUANA

El autobús
Escupe humo
La gente
Se aleja.

RURAL

Los niños
Juegan en la tierra
El polvo
Maquilla sus rostros
Sus ropas
Obtienen acentos
De barro
Y la felicidad
Aterriza en su espacio
Una vez
En la ciudad
Señoras diabólicas
Gruñen:
¡Mira que sucios
Están los niños!

THEN TELL ME, WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

“I don’t know where the future is taking us
What I don know is that it is not pretty
Therefore to continue forth is an act of heroism
An act of love
We have to grab courage and hold fast to it
Because we live in the age winter
It is dark. Love has become cold. Apathy is king.
And the New Year does not look very promising
In a world of clichés nothing does.
What then?
Can you really tell me you are not afraid?
It is hard to say
Continue playing musical chairs with your life
And you could be left with a void”

CAZA MAYOR

Antes sólo
Caza mayor
Con mi 30,06
Pura felicidad
Cuando veía comer
A mis niños
Carne del venado
Que yo tumbé

BIKINI

Él me dijo

DEA

Entonces sí era verdad
Sí nos seguían
Nos espiaban
Nos vigilaban
No fueron las drogas
No fue paranoia
Era realidad
Nunca me dijiste

No tengo dinero
Y siento remordimiento
Porque en sus ojos
Hay rastros de una tragedia
Y no sé que decirle
No quiero decirle que no
Siento su pena
No sé cómo contestarle
Mi mecánico
Viaja a lado mío
Contesta por mí
Le dice
Con soda me oxido
Mejor pura cerveza
La mujer se aleja
Hacia otro auto
Antes que cambie el semáforo.

LOS BOTES

El vecino
Tiene sed
Me invita un bote
Llega su amigo
Con más cerveza
Me dan otro bote

El señor
De la retroexcavadora
También bebe sus botes
Mientras conduce su maquina
En la puesta de sol

Cuando terminó
De partir mi tierra
Le pagué por sus servicios
Y le di otro bote
Me vecino dijo
Hace viento
Que frío
Hace falta un tequila.

THE SIGNIFICANCE

“We can be home in no time” said the runaway to the pimp.

The pimp didn’t know how to react to such words, he wanted to understand all those things the he forgot at Sunday school, and he was seeing this little runaway with the eyes of a little angel. For a moment he forgot the viciousness of his life.

Me hice rico.

No me dispararon.

GUERRA

El mundo de la amistad
Es tan frágil
Como una balsa cubana

Hay que navegarlo
Con mareas de cautela
Los tiburones
Están escondidos
En las sonrisas

La muerte del aprecio
Es como la amputación
De un miembro

Como un ataque al corazón
Tiene sabor
A guerra

THE NIGHT I IGNORED DEATH

I heard the horses around me. One of the horsemen would ask in a loud voice

“What’s your name?”

But I would keep my eyes closed. I did not want to deal with the question. I was laying on the middle of the street and my motorcycle was destroyed. My legs felt like they were broken and I was somewhat cold. The night was illuminated by the lights on the rescue vehicles.

“What’s your name?” The strong voice barked again.

I decided to keep my eyes shout because I knew there shouldn’t be any horses around me, just the fire engine and the ambulance, and a few cops. The guys with the horses were definitely out place, and I definitely didn’t want to see them, their leader was insistent and kind of rude. I did not feel like talking to them. I felt like ignoring them. My best bet was to keep my eyes close till I was in the ambulance. And that’s precisely what I did.

“What happened to the guys on horses” I asked the paramedic that was sitting beside me in the ambulance.

“There were no horses” he said as he was fastening the belt on the stretcher.

“You didn’t see the horses around me?”

“No, there were no horses; I was with you all the time. I saw no horses. Try to relax we’ll be in the hospital in no time”

WANTING TO WATCH TV

Today was the first time (since I returned to Mexico from a 15 year hiatus) I sat down, well laid down, to watch TV. Looking and wanting something to divert my mind from the seriousness of the day by using this electric device that produces visions. So I laid down on a borrowed bed, turned on the Japanese TV set, and stared at the myriad of images that danced electronically.

In better times I used to shot at televisions deep in the woods of the Northwest. Let me explain, I befriended a group of futuristic hunters that would shot at a screen if it showed big game in it. Now I am here, channel surfing this Mexican cable puzzle.

I decided to try it again, because a local celebrity wrote a comment on one of my poems. It reads something like this: “Television also has good things?” This comment changed my outlook on the controversial device. I tried; the good Lord knows that I did my best to get reacquainted with the tele. It did not worked out. It wouldn’t be that bad if it wasn’t for all the commercials. Those things are macabre.

THIS MORNING

I am here
Standing on this place
With my feet on the dirt
And I don’t want to leave
I don’t want to move
I just want to be still
And feel the breeze
See the ocean
Decipher the morning mist.

LA CUEVA ES UN HOGAR

Los monarcas de barro
Reinan en dominios biológicos
Con certidumbre perpetua

Las nubes son tus caminos
Los ojos de los niños tu aeropuerto
Los comerciantes escupirán espanto
Pero tu parentesco te hablará con besos

EN LA CUEVA

Futuro es una palabra hermosa
Porque nos enseña a enamorarnos
Nos viste de azul y rojo
Y nos convierte en obreros cósmicos

Y el Verbo es la poesía
Una saga que sacude
Los corazones del mundo
Porque veo por los orificios
De mi nous

Felices entendimientos
Que almacenas en tu pecho
Para poder caminar en los mañanas
Y sonreír en las cercanías

Agrando mis extremidades
Para abrazar al planeta
¡Que ternura!
Es una mamá redonda

Les hablo a ustedes
Hijos de de la globalización
¡Salud a todos!
Cuando la esencia salga
Como una llamarada
Espero que la puedan beber

Ser el primogénito
De la muerte
Es saber amar.

YOU LET YOU LOVE GROW COLD

Se extinguieron
Tus fuegos
Con el desamor.

THE AXIOM

“The pressures of society are to blame for the psychosis of its citizens. How can we cure this?”

“Society is not to blame. Society is our byproduct; we contribute to its constant mutations. You want to cure society? Start by curing yourself”

“I am sorry”

“I know you have a lived a hard life. Your suffering is like plasma in your face, it’s okay, you will make it. I won’t hold against you what you did back then. It was brilliantly done but you were unconscious. It was the result of a loveless existence”

THEOPHANY

And I had a theophany
When I saw all that
Everything I wasn’t suppose to see

Y caminamos prisioneros
Por el sendero de las sombras
Y las estrellas del egoísmo
Están al pasar las nubes
Pero el mundo brilla de noche
Con el beso de la codicia.

Permanecemos taciturnos
Nuestros ojos
Son la pantalla
De la tragedia
La imagen es de sufrimiento profundo
Como los océanos del mundo
Nuestras lágrimas
Se resbalan como metáforas

Entonces el sol
Es nuestra silla en llamas
Y creemos más en lo invisible
Porque el Amor hizo escala
En un castillo de arena.

EXCLAMATIONS

“You are
Hurting me!”

“It’s suppose
To hurt!”

CARA DE UNA SEÑORA TRASTORNADA

-¿Tijuana?

LAY LOW

“What are you doing tonight?” I asked speaking directly into the telephone.

“Nothing, write I guess, what about you?” Éktor replied from his downtown home.

“I don’t know, I was invited to a couple of parties, but they are all the way across town, I don’t feel like braving the police check points”

“You got that right”

“It is not like it used to be”

“Now and days you have to hit the trenches and lay low. Make sure you have enough provisions to party through the night. Then when the sun comes up, you can go home. Welcome to the future”

IT’S NEW YEAR’S EVE AND I DON’T MIND

Because I drive
On a dirt road
And the sun is bright
I can see the ocean
So blue
And I travel
This deserted road
With no urgency
The tires
Turn very slow
And I am poor
Right now
And I don’t mind.

CACTUS Y PATA DE PERRO EN MSN MESSENGER

-¿Qué onda? –saludé.

-Nariz… relaxing.

-Vino tu old crew por mí y me invitaron unas heladas

-Neta.

-Simon

-¿Manejas el “tamarindo” (faithful Japanese car, that looks like a piece of crap, and it’s brown in color) en la nieve?

-Simon, recuerdo esas nevadas. ¿No se fue la luz?

-Se iba on and off.

Guns and ammo included.

No estás afuera

La certeza del dinero
Es un fantasma
Confía en el canto de tu alma

Los sentimientos
Son un mar de dudas
El fuego
También es tuyo.

EL EXORCISMO

-Abre todas las ventanas de la casa.

-¿Porqué?

-¿Qué no puedes oler el tufo a marihuana?

-Ah.

“Tell me, what do you think of religion?”

“Why do you want to know?”

“I can’t explain why”

WITH EVERY BREATH MAN LIVES RELIGION

Man is religious by nature
Man without religion…
There no such thing

Man lives to worship
Man is a worshipper by nature
If man does not worship
Man dies.

THE DOCTOR LOOKED AT MY PREVIOUS WOUND AND ASKED

“What happened to your leg?”

“I was ran over by a bus” I answered

“Did the bus hit you leg?”

“Not exactly, I was inside the bus -the doctor’s face turned into a question mark- the back tires of the bus were the ones that ran over my leg”

“But how did it happen? You said you were inside the bus?

“That’s correct. I was pushed out from the back door of the bus”

“You were pushed?”

“Yes”

“By whom”

“A friend”

“A friend pushed you?”

“Yes, I rather remember it as playful push”

“Good heavens! Where’s you friend now?”

“He committed suicide”

“What?”

“He killed himself. I understand his wife left him, he got depressed, grabbed a revolver put the gun in his mouth an pulled the trigger”

“You should write a book”

I decided to stop the conversation. I looked at her belly and I could tell she was pregnant.

“Are you ready to tell us your side of the story?”

“Yes, do you want to hear it in Spanish or English?”

“It doesn’t matter, everything is being recorded; our experts will translate and interpret everything you have to say”

“Very well then, I will opt for Spanish, since it tends to be more of a mystical language”

“You can begin when you’re ready”

I looked at all of them. All six of them gathered in that warehouse. I could tell that we were somewhere in the country because the air smelled different. There was probably a diary close by. I saw the faces of each one of them; all told stories of broken families, all drove cars that were not paid for. Some of them took Prozac, others hit the bottle every night. The ones with wives would beat them regularly. The rest would beat their girlfriends. At least half of them, the more macho types, were closet homosexuals. All were disintegrating. The only thing that gave them the little meaning they had was their jobs. I felt like shedding tears for them, but I tried to control my self the best I could. I took a deep breath as I thought “Lord Jesus Christ” and then exhaled as with the internal words “have mercy of them” I proceeded in Spanish…

“When you wake up –he said as he approached me with the needle in his hand- you will not remember anything”

“You can try to erase my memory with drugs, but this will do nothing to my spirit, and remember, is better to see, remember and thinks with the eye of the spirit. Before you stuck that needle in my arm, I want to tell you this: You would have been a good doctor. Go back to the vocation of healing people before you lose the gift”

“Stop! Don’t medicate him, he’s a Citizen -said an older man that walked towards us form the shadows- why didn’t you tell us you are citizen?”

“No one asked” I answered

“We’ll let you go, and I am not going to tell you to keep quiet about what happened here, since nobody will believe you anyway”

“It’s okay; I guess I’ll write a fiction novel”

Thursday, December 25, 2003

“The Nativity is one of the most important aspects of human history –he said as he played with his white beard- in order to understand the Nativity you need to understand love. Do you understand what I am saying or do you want me to try my Spanish?”

“It’s okay, I understand”

Wednesday, December 24, 2003

“Why do you keep telling us all these stories about Christmas? What we really want to know are you political ideas. I’ll tell you what, tell us who you know and we will let you go”

“There are people out there, confused with stolen ideas from books, bad taste in their mouths. You know the types; they’re the ones who are so bent with God that proclaim themselves atheists. It is not that they don’t believe. They believe a lot, insomuch that they hate God. The poor fellows, I feel for them. I think of them dearly this Christmas”

“Okay boys, who is Santa?
“A coca cola product”
“Who is the real guy?”
“Saint Nicholas”
“Very good, you all will get lots of gifts this Christmas”

I hate Christmas
He said
Then he snorted
Some cheap blow

MARRY CHRISTMAS & DO NOT DISTURB

Christmas is best
With good liquor
Your wife in your bed
The children playing with their toys
In their room upstairs.

“Marry Christmas bro; I am glad to see you again”
“Thanks Al, I’m also glad to see you”
“Did you have a good year?”
“It was a tough one”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah man”
“Hopefully next one will be better”:
“I am afraid things are not going to get better, do you dig what I am saying?”
“Yeah” The sound of his voice was wet with sadness.
“The most important thing is to be right inside –I said as I put my right hand on my chest- if we can do this, we’ll make it”

“What’s this shit I heard about the blog overthrowing the book?”
“That’s the talk in cyberspace man”
“Okay, I will burn my books”

“I am your brother and I love you. Everything will be fine. I will not tell you superiors about your breakdown. I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers. Don’t worry about your wife, the cancer she has in her womb will be gone when you get home. She will not die. She will survive”

I could see tears in his eyes. He was touched. In my heart I wished for the best for this guy. He was more good than bad.

“Here, take my gun –he pulled a glock 9 millimeter from his shoulder holster and handed to me- I will show you a way out of this place”

“I don’t walk with the gun anymore. Now my confidence is in the Most High. Put that pistol back in its place”

“Okay, we are going to ask you more questions, we sent you someone who speaks your language and he said you were mocking him. This is not a game; you better get serious with us, because you can pay dearly for your attitude”

“I am serious person”

“Okay, we will begin”

“Wait, bring the guy who speaks Spanish, I want to clear up any misunderstanding with him. He was a good sport” I said.

“I will give you one last chance, if it doesn’t work, you will deal directly with me, and I will not be nice”

“I understand”

The lonely man walked out of my room talking his loneliness with him. The Spanish speaking guy came in.

-Quiero disculparme por cualquier mal entendido –exclamé.

-Aceptaré tu disculpa si respondes mis preguntas honestamente.

–me preguntó.

-No.

-¿Eres religioso?

-¿A qué iglesia perteneces?

I REMEMBER BETTER TIMES

“Hey Juan, what’s up my man?”

He asked as I watched the traffic jam; all those cars going nowhere. We were sitting under the tree.

“Not much bro, how are you?” I answered. It is always good to talk to my African big brother.

“I am doing fine little brother; I am looking for a new language, one that can be understood by everybody in the world. Do you dig what I am talking about?”

“I do man, you’re talking about the language of grace, you know, the language that has a lot of feeling”

“You the man!”

No dije nada. Sólo sonreí.

-Está bien. Empecemos.

-¿Juan?

-Ése mero.

EL PLANETA SALE A DAR LA VUELTA

No permitas
Que tu afán
Por la subsistencia
De las cosas
Oxide de tu sangre.

“You are such a fool, you left the comforts of America for the uncertainty of the third world. How irresponsible can you be?”

“Comfort is decay and America is everywhere. The third world is the third world. Sometimes foolishness can save you”

“You’re crazy”

“Perhaps I am”

“Do you hate Americans?”

“No, I love them”

“Very well then, this interrogation is over”

I kept silence.

DESCANSO

Quiso decir “medicina” y no opio.

“Tell me more about your experience, how was it for you”

“It was like war. It was hell”

THE BATTLE FIELD

It is late
And I miss my wife
My children

And the war goes on
The words explode
Like cluster bombs

My isolation
Is necessary
Like water
For an arid awakening

The letters
Sing together
Like a Mormon choir
Lyrical fragmentation
I want to turn it off.

THEN I STUMBLED INTO THE AMERICAN DREAM AND I COULD NOT GET OUT.

“I am very disappointed in you”

“Why you say that?” I asked

“Because you have squandered all the opportunities you had, and you had many. A lot of people can only dream for all the chances you had, all those jobs, all the money you were making, many people desperately need that money. How can you do this to your self, to your wife, to your kids? How can you do this to me?

“It was not easy. It was like drinking a bitter medicine that will save your life, at first it is difficult, but later you get used to it and get a taste for it. When I left the matrix I felt like a human being once again, I could feel, I could love, and I could rest. All those things were taken from me. When I joined the dogmas of the corporations I became a slave to greed, I also worked to fulfill the greed of others. It was horrible. When I quit that addiction, I was able to breathe again. I stopped choking, I stopped dying. It took off the weight of my folly. Then I saw my wife and my children like the real treasure they are. I was blind and now I see. This is the most important decision I have made as a family man. This is why I did it”

Mexico was America and America was Mexico, that was how I understood things, but in the “other side” streets were bigger and cars were newer. I saw a lot of girls that look like Charley’s Angels when we would go to strip malls. There were a lot of toys that I could not have. This has been the case until recently.

MY AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY IS SOMETHING LIKE THIS

I was conceived when an American spaceship landed on the moon. I grew up with Ronald McDonald as my hero, I remember when my mother would make me kiss his statue and take pictures of my brother and me. We had to cross the border into California in order to eat in the chapel of the clown.

TU VIDA

Es como
Una página
Que se desprende
Un libro
Que se convierte
En polvo

LOS POBRES

Estamos sentados
En la tierra
Es de mañana
Bebemos café
Vemos las islas
Flotando en el mar
Es diciembre
Hace calor.

LEE MALVO

Te quieren matar
Porque eres
Un niño negro.

RIMBOMBANCIA

Los artistas
Piensan que el quejarse
Es arte.

COMBATANT

You are
A citizen
Of the universe
When you
Do those things
So brave
So good.

LUCHADOR

Eres
Un ciudadano
Del universo
Cuando haces
Buenas obras
Eficaces
Valientes.

LAS ONDAS MAGNÉTICAS ATERRIZAN EN MI CABEZA

Mi nido voló
Como en la película
El Wizard of Oz
Hubo turbulencia
Como en la nave
De Star Trek
Con las caricias
De los disturbios
Me acordé
De Hollywood
Del Dr. Spock
De Dorothy

Fue un implante
En mi cerebro
Las ondas magnéticas
Me visitan

Alguien
No quiere
Que piense
En lo infinito.

TERTULIA

Mientras el poeta leía
La historia de una ramera
Ella luchaba
Contra las lágrimas
Sentada en el sofá
Con un vaso de cerveza
En sus manos
Sentí su congoja
Su soledad
Junto con el frío.

POEMA PARA SADDAM HUSSEIN

Tu pecado
Fue ser el rey del desierto
Con un imperio de oro negro.

Was to be the king of the desert
With an empire of black gold.

REMEMBERING THE END

I am breathing
Without ambition
As if the end of the world
Was today.

POEMA PARA AL SHARPTON

Si fueses presidente
Se acabarían los inviernos
En Estado Unidos
